Styles

When classes first began at the First Baptist Church, students were taught Shito-Ryu (shee-toh-roo), which is based off Japanese traditions. Later on this evolved to a new style created by Sensei Buskirk called Nishi Kaze Seido (Nee-shee kah-zee see-doh), meaning West Wind System. This style was designed as a more modern method of self-defense. It incorporates the hard and soft techniques of Shito-Ryu, Aikido's principles of energy and controlling an attacker, the stick and sword techniques of the Eskrima arts, Brazilian Jujitsu ground fighting, and the full contact of Kyokushin.

Sensei Geoff Gilman at the Yuciapa Christian Church teaches Kyokushin (kee-yoh-koo-shihn), a style of stand-up, full contact karate founded by Masutatsu Oyama. Kyokushin focuses on Technique, Kata, and Kumite. It’s known as a circular style, emphasizing realistic combat, physical endurance, and practicality.
